Consultation on conversion to an Alternative Provision Academy

The management committee of The Octagon Pupil Referral Unit and Primary PRU in Haringey recently passed a  resolution to apply for conversion to a sponsored  Alternative Provision Academy. The Secretary of State issued an Academy order on December  19th 20013 in which he approved the TBAP Trust as the sponsor.  Alternative Provision Academies are a new type of school with more freedoms than local authority maintained units.

The DfE state that:

“Academy status will give education professionals working in AP greater scope to innovate and raise standards for the pupils in their PRUs, although remaining clearly accountable for the outcomes they deliver. AP Academies will enjoy a number of benefits over maintained PRUs, which include:

  • Freedom from local authority control
  • Greater control of their budget
  • The ability to set their own pay and conditions for staff
  • The ability to change the lengths of terms and school days to benefit pupils
  • Freedom to develop new types of support to pupils
  • There will now be a period of formal consultation to consider the views of all our stakeholders.

This will begin with an Open Meeting at the Octagon Pupil Referral Unit on  27th February 2014 – 3.30 pm.  At that meeting the TBAP trust will be introduced  and what Academy status will mean for the Octagon AP Academy will be discussed.

Following that meeting the consultation will run for 4 weeks finishing on Thursday 27th March 2013

Questions can be emailed to the Executive Headteacher on head@tbap.org.uk
