about THE OCTAGON AP ACADEMY


The Octagon AP Academy supports up to 58 primary and secondary learners who have experienced difficulties with their learning and behaviour in mainstream school. A number of our learners have a Statement of Special Educational Needs/Education Health Care Plan. Learners are taught in small, well supported groups and follow a broad curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Humanities, PE, Art, Food Technology, Music and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education. Learners have extra support for literacy and numeracy. Learners at KS4 can enjoy a broad curriculum including academic and vocational components. Our year 11 learners achieve outcomes far beyond the national averages for schools of this type. Primary learners also enjoy the Forest Schools programme and an enrichment programme which allows them to explore healthy lifestyles and to experience outdoor pursuits and London's cultural sites.

Re-integration of learners to mainstream educational provision is a priority. All primary learners receive intensive support programmes that help them manage their behaviour at the Octagon and in their mainstream setting. Many primary learners return to their mainstream school within one full term. KS3 and Y10 learners are supported to return to a mainstream school. On average more than a third of learners made a successful transition back to mainstream education.

Some KS4 learners prefer to move on to a college setting to pursue a vocational course. We support and monitor placements in a number of colleges within Haringey and in neighbouring boroughs. We work closely with families and outside agencies to give learners the skills and resilience they need to be safe and to raise their expectations of themselves as successful citizens.

During her tenure as Deputy Headteacher she also successfully trained and worked as an Ofsted inspector. Sarah came to special education following a successful career in middle and senior leadership within secondary mainstream settings, always working in schools in challenging urban contexts from Liverpool to London.

Appointed as Director of Access and Inclusion in July 2015 and interim Head of School in June 2016. Senior Leadership experience in Waltham Forest, Hackney and Haringey specialising in inclusion, behaviour management and interventions.
